Dr. Russell Woodhead is a Clinical Psychologist specialising in complex trauma and youth advocacy. Based in Kent, his practice serves as a critical bridge between doctorate-level clinical expertise and the creative, empathetic support required by adolescents and young adults. The goal was to build a visual identity that could hold this unique dual-authority: the professional rigour demanded by parents and referrers, and the deep warmth required to engage young people navigating trauma.

Summary
We moved away from the sharp, cold, and overtly clinical aesthetics that often make psychological support feel intimidating or institutional. In its place, we developed a "tiered system" that balances professional gravity with a sense of "understated playfulness". The resulting identity is a purposeful construct, an authority figure designed for trust, communicating through the open, warm language of empathy.
Challenge
In the mental health sector, there is often a visual "barrier to entry" for young people. Formal titles and clinical branding can feel like an assessment rather than a safe space. The challenge was to honour Russell’s high-level qualifications and support his goal of increasing advertised rates, while simultaneously creating a brand that felt like a "personal invitation" for a 13-year-old in crisis, while still attracting young adults in their early 20s. We had to solve the "Kingfisher paradox", incorporating a personal symbol of calm without using harsh, angular geometry that could feel visually "sharp" to a trauma survivor.
Solutions
We developed an identity rooted in Compassion and Advocacy, treating the brand as a "Safe Harbour" through strategic visual softening.
The Tiered Logic: We created a Primary Logo for professional credibility and a Secondary "Russell-only" Logo to remove formal barriers. By prioritising the first name for youth-facing touchpoints, we transformed the clinician into an equal and a safe space.
The Alchemy of Colour: We extracted a palette from the Kingfisher to ground the practice in nature. We used Stormy Teal for clinical stability, Light Strong Cyan for trust, and Harvest Orange to inject a vital spark of optimism and creativity.
The Beauty of the Non-Linear: We rejected rigid lines in favour of a brand pattern of twisting loops. This abstract metaphor celebrates the authentic therapeutic journey, acknowledging that healing involves setbacks and "looping back", a visual reminder that a "curly" path is more beautiful and honest than a straight one.
Digital Accessibility: We designed a library of 30 bespoke, "whiteboard-style" icons to make complex psychological concepts scannable and "light" for young audiences, ensuring the brand remains inclusive and neurodivergent-friendly.
Outcome: Dr. Russell Woodhead now possesses a market-leading identity that successfully bridges the gap between expert clinical support and relatable human experience. By trading industry clichés for a sophisticated, metaphor-driven design, the practice is perfectly positioned to grow its professional authority while staying profoundly true to the young clients it serves.
